JackMa 0 Postad måndag kl 10:00 Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum and also to boating and outboards, so I hope being here will help me to get up to speed with the basics. I just bought a second hand Crescent 45 outboard 3 cylinders. Through some internet research I have done, I believe these engines are also known as Archimende Volvo Penta. It's got good good compression on all 3 cylinders. I have checked this with a compression tester. However, it doesn't seem to have any sparks on the spark plugs. I have tried to change the one of the plug, moving it between the coil leads, but still nothing. I have then tested the 3 spark plugs with a spark plug tester and they all have spark. I have checked the ignition coil primary and secondary windings and they seem to be fine, primary reads 2.6 ohms and secondary 8.7 K ohms on all 3 coils. I have also checked the wires that go from each ignition coil to the connections pack, and they are fine, as they have good continuity (0.1 ohms of resistance). I presume there is something wrong with the stator / trigger or with the points ignition. See photos of the engine attached. Can someone help me to understand what do I need to do to understand if there is an issue with the stator / trigger? Does anybody have a service manual that could help me to troubleshoot the issues? Many thanks in advance.
Mercury_44XS 303 Postad måndag kl 11:13 Hi Check all wires for breakage, short to ground or open circuit. Clean all wire connectors with fine stainless/brass wire brush or wet sandpaper 400/600 (but dry) one at the time.. Reconnect wires and tighten screws. Use Permatex Dielectric Grease (or equivalent) to seal and prevent corrosion, on all connections when fully tightened. Do NOT use CRC 5-56 or WD40 on electric/ignition components. Clean breaker points with fine wet sandpaper (but dry) or a contact file if there is a crater/top on the points. if you use sandpaper, clamp sandpaper between points fully closed and pull sandpaper in one direction, repeat until points are clean and free of corrosion. Set point to 0.45 mm (.017"). Install flywheel and tighten nut to correct torque. Disconnect all black wires to stop switch. Remove spark plugs, and discard old spark plugs. Buy new ones, should be NGK B7HS or equivalent. Check spark with a new spark plug to in contact with good ground. If you have spark at this point, reconnect wires to stop switch and check spark again. If you need new parts, try: Snickeri & Marin i Näsum (has a FB page but no web site) Phone: 0708241609 Contact: Inge Andersson PS. Inge Andersson might also have a workshop manual (copy) for sale Best regards Pär 1 Dela detta inlägg Länk till inlägg Dela på andra webbplatser
Mercury_44XS 303 Postad måndag kl 14:36 I thought i had instructions how to set ignition timing, but I can't find them. I have for newer engines but that would not help in this case. Your engine has a fixed ignition plate and perfect setting is very important because the ignition timing affects engine performance (hp), and if it differs to much there's risk for overheating, piston damage or lack of power. You can ask Inge Andersson at Snickeri & Marin i Näsum if he knows setpoint in mm BTDC or if he has a copy of a workshop manual for sale. Your outboard is probably made 1968 to 1973 if it is a Crescent 45, in 1974 these engines got a breakerless Phelon ignition system. Crescent 45/Archimedes 450 is rated at appr. 38 hp (flywheel) and appr. 33 hp at prop shaft.
JackMa 0 Postad måndag kl 14:51 Hi Pär, thanks for your prompt reply and support! I have cleaned all connectors and breaker points and I have managed to get sparks on all spark plugs!!😃 Now, onto the next problem which is: where do I connect the fuel line from the fuel tank to the engine? I presume it needs to be connected to this point?? After I do this maybe I can attempt starting the engine to check how it runs.😃 Thanks in advance. Mercury_44XS 303 Postad måndag kl 15:29 (redigerade) 50 minuter sedan skrev JackMa: I presume it needs to be connected to this point?? That's correct, If you want a quick coupler, it cant be attached outside the bottom cowl (some where). 98 octane and 3% 2-stroke oil NMMA TC-W III classified. Don't use regular non TC-W III oil or pre-mixed chainsaw fuel. Don't use starter fluid (ether), this is a 2-stroke engine and will be damaged. If engine is hard to start, prime thru carburetor throat with gasoline (oil mixed). Clean carburetor inside fuel bowl and orfices first with brake cleaner incl. low speed circiut. Idle mixture screw, back out 1 1/2 revolutions from lightly seated position. Adjust when engine runs at idle. You need a big container with water that covers at least the joint between driveshaft housing and gearhousing. Do not tyr to start engine without water, not even for a few seconds. Without water the impeller will be burnt and destroyed in less then 5 sec. If you don't see cooling water from exhaust relief on backside of the driveshaft housing in appr. 20–25 seconds, stop engine immediately. Then check impeller before you try again.
JackMa 0 Postad tisdag kl 08:06 (redigerade) Thanks Pär. I will try all that and provide some updates.🤞 P.S. I don't understand or see from where the outboard sucks water in for cooling the engine.

Much appreciated. That's a beautiful schematic photo of my engine. May I ask where you got it from?
JackMa 0 Postad onsdag kl 07:38 I have disassembled and cleaned the carburetor and I have realized that the fuel inlet fitting is missing from the fuel clear bowl assembly (see images attached for reference). I presume there was a fitting similar to the banjo connection on the upper part of the bowl. The bottom hole has the same thread as the upper hole, I have checked this by connecting the banjo bolt to the bottom hole and it fits. I measured the banjo bolt thread and it's a bit more than 7mm in diameter. Can somebody confirm which thread size is the missing fitting for the fuel inlet? Thanks in advance. Mercury_44XS 303 Postad onsdag kl 07:58 I think you'll have to contact Inge at Snickeri & Marin i Näsum on FB or phone, I posted his phone number earlier. Those parts is hard to get anywhere else. Is the diaphragm and check valves OK? Fibre washers on the banjo, not copper...
