The ECUME Project becomes reality

The French Navy's twenty future commando boats are to be produced by the British company VT HALMATIC, in a deal announced on 27th June last by the DGA (Arms Department), which will last for 33 months. Twin Marinediesel supercharged engines

are selected for propulsion.

The ECUME*, intended to replace the ETRACO** currently used by French marine commandos, is to be supplied in various versions:

o Assault

o Fire support

o To carry lightweight craft

o And Command (directing a group of ECUMEs)

These new generation vessels, of which the first is due for delivery in September 2007, are to be allocated to ALFUSCO and distributed according to need on French territory (Metropolitan France and overseas) or in other countries for specific missions.

As modular and adaptable platforms, the ECUMES offer enhanced performance particularly in relation to their deployment of arms, carrying capacity, transmission media, and a reduction in signatures and shipment on board Navy vessels.

Their main mission will be to carry out high speed nautical raids in assaults on ships:

o Either based on a naval force - on board frigates (FLF frigates, surveillance frigates, FREMM), or projection and command vessels (BPC), carrying landing craft (TCD) of the Foudre type or light transport ships (BATRAL),

o Or after an air launch at sea from C160, C130H, C130H30 and A400M aircraft.

The ECUMEs will also be able to evacuate people and carry out maritime rescue missions in the context of State action at sea.
