Last August Grand Banks Yachts announced the most recent addition to the Eastbay series, with the new Eastbay 49 Express. Built by Grand Banks and designed by Ray Hunt, the design shares the same philosophy as the successful Eastbay 38 Express. The time proven modified deep v-hull, once the Hunt trademark, will provide superior performance.
The Eastbay 49 Express was designed to incorporate market feedback from current Eastbay 38 owners. The Eastbay 49 Express will offer additional interior accommodations, more living space on the helm deck, and a large engine room.
The standard equipment list is extensive. Highlights include a handcrafted teak interior, holding plate refrigeration, 8.0kw generator, vacu-flush heads, L-shaped settee on the helm deck, and a two-station windlass. As on all the Grand Banks and Eastbay models, there is flexibility in the interior layouts and equipment.
At this writing, a total of twenty four Eastbay 49s have been ordered. All have been ordered with Caterpilllar 3196s at 660hp each. The estimated cruising speed with these engines will be 26 knots, with a top speed of 30 knots. There are a variety of engine packages available.
A full interior mock-up was built and reviewed by both Grand Banks and Hunt. Every detail from silverware storage to the master cabin berth has been carefully reviewed.
In addition to the attention to the interior, every effort is being made to ensure a quiet running boat. The engine room air intake vents have been moved to the hull sides to remove the noise from the proximity of the helm deck. Specially designed vents will feature a 12v blower as well as filters to keep salt spray out and ensure adequate air. Each engine will also be equipped with a special Sound Down coupling and flexible engine mounts to further ensure a guiet ride.
Engine room access will be on the centerline and through a hydraulic lift settee in the cockpit. The access will allow easy step down access in between both engines, and remove the headache of navigating a steep ladder with tools in hand. The cockpit access will also allow the engines to be serviced while not disturbing activities on the helm deck area. Due to the extensive seating, storage, and amenities of the helm deck, it will also function as the boats alternate main saloon. Fiberglass modules will be in place to accommodate optional items such as an icemaker, sink, bottle storage, and a commercial style grill.
Another development over the last few months has been the hard top. Recognizing that the first several 49s have been ordered with the enclosure, Grand Banks decided to make this standard. An optional electro-hydraulic ram will open the front opening windshield. Opening side windows, and overhead hatches will also add to the cross ventilation. The aft end of the helm deck will remain open to the cockpit. Some owners may choose to have a canvas enclosure installed to prolong the cruising season in the colder climates.
